A pool that looks perfectly clear on Sunday can turn cloudy by Wednesday, and the reason is almost always a number that drifted out of range while nobody was looking.

The good news is that pool chemistry comes down to six numbers. Get those six right and hold them there, and algae has nothing to work with, your equipment lasts longer, and swimming is comfortable. Two more readings matter but are checked less often: total dissolved solids should stay under about 1,500 ppm above your starting level, and phosphates — algae food that arrives with lawn fertilizer runoff — ideally stay under 300 ppb.

Why Central Florida Pools Need Tighter Control Than the Chart Suggests

National pool care advice is written for a national climate. Ours is not a national climate. Three things make Central Florida uniquely hard on pool chemistry.

UV intensity. Unstabilized chlorine can lose a large share of its strength in a single sunny afternoon here. That is exactly why cyanuric acid matters so much locally — it acts as sunscreen for your chlorine. A pool with 15 ppm CYA in July is burning through chlorine faster than the owner can add it.

Afternoon storms. Rain is naturally acidic and it arrives in volume. A heavy August downpour dilutes chlorine, drops pH, and washes fertilizer and organic debris off the deck and into the water. This is the single most common reason a well-maintained pool turns cloudy overnight.

Water temperature. Chemical reactions accelerate as water warms. A pool sitting at 88°F consumes chlorine substantially faster than the same pool at 78°F, and algae reproduces faster too. Summer is simply a higher-demand season for the same body of water.

The practical takeaway: in Central Florida, a chemical reading is a snapshot with a short shelf life. A pool that tested perfectly on Monday can be genuinely out of range by Thursday after one storm. That is why testing frequency matters as much as the numbers themselves.

How Often to Test Each Level

Not everything needs checking at the same interval. Here is a realistic schedule for a residential pool in our service area.

Fixing Levels in the Right Order

One of the most common mistakes we see is adjusting chemicals in the wrong sequence, which turns a one-step fix into a week of chasing readings. The correct order is not arbitrary — each level affects the next.

First, total alkalinity. Alkalinity buffers pH. Trying to correct pH while alkalinity is out of range means your pH will not hold. Fix this first, always.

Second, pH. With alkalinity stable, pH becomes far easier to bring into the 7.4 to 7.6 window and keep there.

Third, calcium hardness. Slower to change and harder to reverse. Note that calcium can only be lowered by draining and replacing water, so it is worth watching before it climbs.

Fourth, cyanuric acid. Same caution — CYA only comes down through dilution. Adding stabilizer is easy and permanent, which is precisely why it should be done carefully and in small amounts.

Fifth, chlorine. Adjust last. Chlorine works properly only when pH and CYA are already in range, so correcting it first simply wastes product.

Reading the Signs Before You Test

Your pool usually tells you something is off before the test kit confirms it. A few reliable signals:

Cloudy water that will not clear with filtration typically points to high pH or high calcium. Eye and skin irritation is far more often a pH problem than a chlorine problem — properly balanced chlorine does not sting. Scale on the tile line means calcium or pH is running high. A slick or slippery feel on the walls is early-stage algae, which means chlorine has been low for several days. And if you are adding chlorine constantly but the reading never rises, the culprit is usually cyanuric acid that is either far too low or far too high.
