It is one of the most common questions we get on service calls across Orlando, Kissimmee and St. Cloud: "How long do I actually need to run my pool pump?" Most homeowners are guessing. Some run the pump around the clock and watch their power bill climb. Others cut it to three or four hours to save money, then call us in July wondering why the water turned cloudy and green.

Florida is not the rest of the country. Our heat, rainfall, pollen and sun exposure mean a pump schedule that works fine in Ohio will let algae take hold here in a matter of days. The One Rule That Matters: Turnover, Not Hours

The math is simple. Take your pool volume in gallons, divide by your pump's flow rate in gallons per hour, and you get the hours needed for one full turnover.

A typical 15,000-gallon Central Florida pool with a pump moving roughly 3,000 gallons per hour needs about five hours for one turnover. But one turnover is the floor, not the target. In Florida heat, we recommend planning for one and a half to two turnovers during peak season, because sun burns off chlorine faster than the filter can distribute it in a single pass.

Rule of thumb for Central Florida: divide your pool's gallons by your pump's hourly flow rate, then add 40 to 60 percent for summer. That is your daily runtime.

Notice that variable-speed pumps run longer, not shorter. That is not a mistake. A variable-speed pump at low RPM uses dramatically less electricity than a single-speed unit at full throttle, so you get more filtration hours for less money. Running a variable-speed pump for 12 hours at 1,400 RPM typically costs less than running a single-speed pump for 6 hours.

Day or Night? When to Schedule Your Runtime

Run your pump during daylight hours. This is where a lot of well-meaning advice goes wrong.

Chlorine is consumed by ultraviolet light, and algae photosynthesizes in sunlight. If your pump is off all afternoon, you have stagnant, warm, sunlit water with a shrinking chlorine residual. That is exactly the condition algae needs. Circulating during the day keeps sanitizer moving through the water when demand is highest.

If your utility charges time-of-use rates, split the schedule instead of moving it to overnight. Six hours in the morning and four in the late afternoon works well, and it keeps the surface skimming through the hottest part of the day when oils, sunscreen and debris accumulate fastest.

If you only remember one scheduling tip: never let your pool sit unfiltered through an entire Florida afternoon. That is when algae wins.

Signs Your Runtime Is Wrong

Your pool will tell you before your test kit does. Watch for these.

Signs you are running too little: water looks dull or hazy by midweek; a fine film of debris settles on the floor even after vacuuming; chlorine reads fine in the morning but near zero by evening; waterline scum forms quickly; you smell chlorine strongly, which usually means chloramines from poor circulation rather than too much sanitizer.

Signs you are running too much: your electric bill jumped without a rate change; the pump is noticeably hot to the touch or noisier than it was; the filter pressure gauge climbs faster than normal because you are simply pushing more water through it. Excess runtime rarely damages water quality, but it does wear the motor and inflate costs.

One important caveat: if your water stays cloudy no matter how long you run the pump, the problem is not runtime. It is usually a dirty or undersized filter, a failing pump impeller, or chemistry that has drifted out of range. Adding hours to a system that cannot filter properly just raises your bill.
