You walk out back on a Saturday morning, coffee in hand, and the pool that was crystal clear on Thursday now looks like someone poured milk in it. The water is still blue. You can sort of see the drain. But it is hazy, dull, and nothing like the pool you paid for.
Cloudy water is the single most common call we get across Orlando, Kissimmee and St. Cloud, and it is also the most misdiagnosed. Most owners reach straight for shock. Sometimes that works. Often it makes the haze worse, because shock only treats one of the seven things that actually cause cloudy water.
Central Florida makes this harder than it is up north. Afternoon storms dump organic debris and dilute chemistry in twenty minutes, our fill water is hard, and summer water temperatures sit in the high 80s where chlorine burns off fast and algae multiplies. A pool here can go from clear to cloudy in a single afternoon.
First, narrow it down before you add anything
Adding chemicals to a cloudy pool without testing is how a one-day problem becomes a two-week problem. Spend ten minutes on these checks first.
Test with a fresh kit — strips older than a year read low on chlorine and will send you in the wrong direction. Then look at the pool from the deck at an angle, straight down over the deep end, and at the waterline tile. Even haze throughout points to chemistry or filtration. Haze heavier in one corner or near the steps points to circulation or early algae. A gritty film on the tile points to calcium. Finally, note your pump's pressure gauge and compare it to the reading when the filter was last cleaned. That one number separates two of the seven causes immediately.

1. Low free chlorine
The most common cause, and the easiest. Free chlorine below 1 ppm means bacteria and organics are winning. In Central Florida summer heat, an unstabilized pool can lose its entire chlorine residual in a single sunny day. Shock to 10–12 ppm, run the pump a full 24 hours, and retest. If it holds above 3 ppm the next morning, you have found your problem.
2. High pH and high calcium hardness
Our fill water across Orange and Osceola counties is hard, and every top-off adds more calcium. When pH climbs above 7.8, dissolved calcium falls out of solution as microscopic crystals — that is the chalky white cloudiness, and it is also what builds the crust you feel on the tile. Bring pH down to 7.4–7.6 with muriatic acid and retest alkalinity. If calcium hardness is over 400 ppm, no chemical fixes it; you need to drain part of the pool and refill.
3. A filter that cannot keep up
If your pressure gauge reads 8–10 psi above its clean baseline, your filter is passing dirt straight back into the pool. Sand needs replacing roughly every five years, cartridges every two to three, DE grids every seven to ten — and in our climate, plan on the short end of every one of those ranges.
A pool with perfect chemistry and a clogged filter will stay cloudy forever. Chemistry kills what is in the water; the filter is what physically removes it. You need both, and owners in Central Florida almost always underestimate how fast our debris load clogs a filter.
4. Dead spots in circulation
Water that does not move does not get treated. If the haze sits in the corners, around the steps, or behind the ladder, your return jets are aimed wrong. Point them slightly downward and in the same rotational direction to create a slow circular flow across the whole pool. Then check run time: in Florida summer you want full volume turnover daily, which for most residential pools means 8 to 12 hours, not 4.
5. Algae before you can see it as green
Algae clouds water well before the pool looks green. The tell is combined chlorine above 0.5 ppm plus walls that feel slick rather than squeaky. Shock hard, then brush every surface — walls, floor, steps, behind the lights. Brushing is not optional: it breaks the protective layer that makes algae resistant to chlorine. Follow with a maintenance algaecide.
6. Cyanuric acid lock-out
This one blindsides people. Cyanuric acid, the stabilizer in every chlorine tablet, protects chlorine from the sun — but it accumulates. Past roughly 80 ppm it binds chlorine so tightly that your test reads 3 ppm while the water behaves as if it has almost none. Florida pools running tablets year-round hit this constantly, and no chemical removes CYA. The only fix is dilution: drain a portion and refill.
7. Particles too fine for your filter
Sometimes chemistry is textbook, the filter is clean, and the water is still hazy — suspended particles too small for your filter to catch. A clarifier clumps them into pieces the filter can grab over a day or two. A flocculant drops everything to the floor overnight, after which you vacuum to waste, not back through the filter. Faster, but you lose several inches of water.
What this actually costs you in Florida
Cloudy water is not just cosmetic. Water you cannot see the bottom through is a genuine drowning hazard — Florida health code requires commercial pools to close when the main drain is not visible, and the same logic applies at home with kids in the water.
It also compounds. A week of cloudy water almost always becomes an algae bloom, and a bloom in August heat means a multi-day recovery, a few hundred dollars in chemicals, and a filter cleaning on top. Catching it in the first 48 hours usually means one dose of the right product.
When to stop guessing and call someone
Handle it yourself if the water cleared within 48 hours of your first correction, your readings are stable, and the pressure gauge is normal.
Call a professional if the pool has stayed cloudy more than five days, if you have shocked twice with no change, if you cannot see the main drain, if your CYA is above 80 ppm, or if cloudiness returns within days of every treatment. That last pattern almost always means a filtration or circulation problem no amount of chemicals will solve.

How long does it take for cloudy pool water to clear?
With the right diagnosis, most pools clear in 24 to 48 hours with the filter running continuously. Calcium or cyanuric acid problems that need partial draining take longer, usually three to five days. If you are past day five with no improvement, the cause has been misidentified.
Can I swim in a cloudy pool?
Not safely. If you cannot clearly see the main drain at the deepest point, a swimmer in distress on the bottom would be invisible from the deck. Cloudiness also frequently means low sanitizer, so bacteria levels may be elevated. Wait until the water is clear.
Why is my pool cloudy after I shocked it?
Two common reasons. Shock kills organic matter but does not remove it — the dead material stays suspended until your filter catches it, which can look worse for 12 to 24 hours before it gets better. The other reason is that shock raises pH, and if your pH climbs past 7.8, dissolved calcium precipitates out and creates a new, whiter haze. Retest pH the day after shocking.
Will a clarifier fix any cloudy pool?
No. Clarifier only helps when the cause is fine suspended particles and your chemistry and filtration are already correct. Used on a pool with low chlorine, a clogged filter, or high CYA, it does nothing and wastes a dose. Always test first.
How often should I test my pool water in Central Florida?
